Pottery Stenciling Workshop
Join us for 2 days of stenciling forms made on the pottery wheel in the heart of San Luis Obispo’s wine country!
This workshop will focus on techniques that I use when stenciling and carving my work. This includes creating paper and vinyl stencils both by hand and digitally on the computer (No digital skills required for participating). Participants must bring at least 1 bisque and/or leather hard straight walled cylinder. Each participant will be able to choose from a premade pattern that will be cut during the workshop based on the dimensions of your piece(s). If you want to create custom stencils by hand, you can bring work of any size, shape and form form, even hand-built pieces, as we will be covering the complexities of measuring the surface areas of any pot.
The first day will be focused on measuring the surface area of your forms and creating custom stencils, along with some demos of how to measure and stencil more complex forms if time or interest permits. Day two will be used to glaze, water-etch, carve, or pierce your stenciled forms.
The pieces that you make will be fired after the workshop and can be picked up later, or shipped for an additional cost.
We will break for a 1hr lunch— feel free to go grab lunch nearby or pack a lunch and enjoy it at the studio. Refreshments will be provided. Also, feel free to bring any food or beverages of your own 🙂 If you want to hang out at the studio/property Saturday evening after the workshop, we can make a potluck dinner, bonfire, talk pottery, you name it! Families and pets are welcome.
Will I get to keep the pieces I make in this workshop?
Yes! I will be offering a bisque firing of 2-4 pieces (depending on size) that are made during the workshop for those who want that, and can offer more firing space for additional cost if necessary. You can pick up your fired pieces at a later date
Do you have recommendations for places to stay?
Recommended cities for stay range from Arroyo Grande, Oceano, Pismo, Shell, Avila, and San Luis Obispo. Paso Robles is also a nice place to stay, but will be about a 50min drive to the studio.
Can I bring my own food or beverages?
Of course! We will be breaking for 1hr for participants to go grab lunch. Feel free to bring food back or a packed lunch and eat at the studio. I will have some refreshments available.
What COVID-19 precautions will be taken?
The workshop will take place in a barn studio with good airflow. Masks will not be required for participants who are fully vaccinated, but if you are not vaccinated you will be encouraged to mask up when in close proximity to others.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are welcome! the property is fenced in, but I’d recommend leashing up so we aren’t worried about a dog potentially getting through a fence.
